Remembering Our Mums

Creative Expressions of Love and Loss

“By being creative…there was the space and freedom to be honest.” We are proud to partner with Expressions of Love and Loss and their video project ‘Remembering Our Mums: Creative Expressions of Love and Loss.’ This project comes from people who have all lost their mums and aims to honour and explore the role that creativity can have in remembering our loved ones.

The project is incredibly moving, depicting a variety of creative responses to grief; from Sam’s powerful ode to his mum, set to the background of a song she loved called “The Best Mum”, to Amelie’s beautiful song “Are You the Robin?”, each piece evokes feelings of love and loss. It explores how creativity can be a vital outlet for people, whatever form it takes. Above all, it honours the love for their mothers. Edwin’s dance, a tribute to his mother in Mexico, tells her “you showed me the meaning of unconditional love, compassion and to enjoy life even in the worst times.”

“This film was inspired first and foremost by my own experience of the death of my Mum in 2018″ says Amelie, who produced the show. “By playing and writing music in her memory, I was able to be truthful about the many feelings I was experiencing, feelings which were often otherwise contained in day-to-day life. Little by little, I began to realise that other people also expressed their grief creatively, through music, drawing, words and animation. This film is an honest testament of the role that creativity has to play in coming to terms with loss and living with grief.”

“We’re thrilled with the feedback so far, with the film being described as ‘beautiful’ , ‘thought-provoking’ , ‘medicinal’ and ‘hopeful'” she continues. “The full film is available to watch below and we hope to facilitate more creative opportunities for bereaved individuals in the coming months. Many thanks to The Harbour for their brilliant support throughout this project.”
